Pre-Natal & Post Natal
Many women experience back pain and sacroiliac pain during pregnancy. The statistics show pregnancy related back pain can be anywhere from 24% to 90%. This is in part due to the hormonal changes that a woman experiences during pregnancy. It is also due to the postural changes that occur which in turn cause added stress on the muscles resulting in a decrease in the desire to move. This inactivity causes pain and can result in a downward cycle of inactivity. However physical therapy can help tremendously. A combination of postural re-education, lifting education, guidance during an exercise program, stabilization exercises, and manual therapy can be of huge benefit to women during this time in their lives. After giving birth there is also a shift in posture and an increase in time spent nursing and caring for the baby. These sustained postures take a toll on a mom’s back, neck and arms. A program designed to address these postures and provide for endurance in the back muscles is so helpful in preventing the pain that is exacerbated by an altered sleep schedule.
